Experience Thoravej 29 – a house and community reimagined

Would you like to see how sustainable architecture and community can go hand in hand? Where ideas are given room to grow, and collaboration across disciplines creates change that can be felt throughout the spaces?

At Thoravej 29, nothing is boring or entirely predictable. It is lively, challenging and meaningful. We believe that interdisciplinary exchange drives society forward, and that physical surroundings shape how we think, collaborate and spend time together.

Join us for a guided tour of the newly renovated building and hear the story of how Pihlmann Architects have worked radically with materials, aesthetics and function. Sustainability runs through everything – from reused building materials to the filling in the seat cushions and the choice of dishcloths. See the building-integrated art and the specially designed furniture, created specifically for the house.

Experience how collaboration and community shape everyday life – perhaps the tour will be the starting point for your next connection or idea. We are happy to share our experience of building bridges between associations, foundations, initiatives and changemakers, and of creating a community that dares to challenge conventional thinking and hierarchies.

See the house. Meet the people who use it.

Thoravej 29 is not simply renovated – it has been transformed so that an entire community could move in. On the tour, you will explore the building designed by Pihlmann Architects, where reused materials, integrated art by artists including Minae Kim and Wu Tsang, and specially designed furniture are not merely decorative, but part of the story of why the building looks and functions the way it does.

You will be guided by our community host or another representative from the house who knows both the architecture and the life within it – from the 38 organisations sharing the address to the collaborations that emerge when you design a building for people to meet in, rather than simply work in. Along the way, there is a good chance of encountering some of the approximately 210 people who go about their daily lives in the building.

We share as we’re learning

Thoravej 29 is designed as a laboratory for new ways of collaborating — not a finished solution we present to others, but an ongoing experiment that we are happy to share our experiences from. We believe that change does not happen behind closed doors, but through dialogue with the world we want to change.

This makes us a valuable speaker for those of you working with communities, organisational development, sustainable construction or new forms of cross-sector collaboration — not because we have figured it all out, but because we are working on it every day.

We are happy to come to you and share the approaches we use to create dialogue and cross-pollination within the house — from spontaneous encounters by the coffee machine to the more committed communities created through our regular programmes. These same approaches are embedded in the architecture: they help 38 organisations genuinely collaborate and make Thoravej 29 a platform for social change rather than simply a property for rent.

You choose whether the talk should focus broadly on the community model, or whether we should explore one specific aspect in more depth — the sustainability of the renovation, the role of art in the house, or the concrete approaches we use to foster dialogue within the community.

Get in touch, and we’ll work out what makes sense for your event.
